Design Joint The joint width must be designed to accommodate joint movement. The joint width must be ≥ 10 mm and ≤ 35 mm. The width to depth ratio must be maintained at 2:1 for facade joints (for exceptions, please refer to the table below).

The minimum joint width for window surrounds is 10 mm. All joints must be designed and sized correctly in accordance with relevant standards and codes of practice prior to installation. The basic data for calculating the required joint width include the type of construction, dimensions, specifications of adjacent building materials, material to be sealed and the direct sunlight exposure characteristics of the joint. Joints ≤ 10 mm wide are generally for crack control and are therefore generally non-expandable. For larger joints please contact Sika Technical Services for further information.
CONSTRUCTION INSTRUCTIONS
SURFACE PREPARATION
The substrate must be clean, dry, homogeneous and free from all contaminants such as dust, oil, grease, cement mortar, old adhesives and poorly adhered coatings which may affect the adhesion of the adhesive. The substrate surface should be sufficiently sound to control the stresses caused by adhesive movement. Surface preparation may be by wire brushing, grinding, sanding or other suitable mechanical means. All dust, loose or friable material must be completely removed from the surface before any activator, primer or sealant/adhesive is applied. Sikaflex®-11 FC has good adhesion without the use of primer and/or activator. However, to improve adhesion and achieve good adhesion consistency, the use of primer and/or surface treatment must be carried out as follows:
Solid substrate:
Aluminium, anodised aluminium, stainless steel, galvanised steel, PVC, powder coated metal, ceramic tiles or slightly rough surfaces should be lightly sanded. Wipe clean and treat with Sika® Aktivator-205 or Sika® Cleaner P with a clean cloth. Set time > 15 minutes (< 6 hours). Other metals such as copper, brass and titanium-zinc alloys should be wiped clean and pre-treated with Sika® Aktivator-205 or Sika® Cleaner P with a clean cloth. Set time > 15 minutes (< 6 hours). Then apply Sika® Primer-3 N by brush before applying the adhesive. Set time > 30 minutes (< 8 hours). For PVC materials, wipe clean and treat with Sika®Primer-215 by brush. Set time > 15 minutes (< 8 hours).
Porous substrate surface:
Concrete, porous concrete, mortar and cementitious tiles should be primed with Sika® Primer-3 N by brush. Set time > 30 minutes (< 8 hours).
Note: Primers and surface activators are substances that enhance the adhesion of adhesives to the substrate. They are not a substitute for surface cleaning or significantly improve the strength of the substrate. For more specific advice and guidance please contact our Technical Services Department.
CONSTRUCTION METHODS / TOOLS
Strictly follow the application procedures as described in the application instructions, the product instructions must always be adjusted to the actual conditions on site.
Adhesive construction sequence:
Construction
After surface preparation is complete, load the gun and cut the nozzle as recommended by the manufacturer. The application can be done in streaks or spots depending on the application. Use only your hands to hold the two materials to be bonded in the correct position before the adhesive sets. Any misalignment can be easily corrected and repositioned within the first few minutes after application. If necessary, temporary tape, wedges, or other aids can be used to hold the materials together during the initial setting time of the adhesive. Any uncured excess adhesive on the surface of the material must be removed immediately. The final strength will be achieved after the Sikaflex®-11 FC+ adhesive has fully cured, typically 24 to 48 hours at 23ºC, depending on environmental conditions and film thickness.
Construction sequence of joint filling
Cover
Masking tape should be used for joints requiring precise and neat sealant seams. Remove the tape before the sealant sets.
Insert slot
After preparing the substrate surface, insert backing rods to the required depth.
Primer
Apply and select appropriate primer according to recommendations from surface treatment documentation. Avoid applying too much, causing solution to accumulate at the bottom of the joint.
Construction
Attach the adhesive to the gun and cut the nozzle tip as recommended by the manufacturer. Apply Sikaflex®-11 FC and ensure that the adhesive fully contacts the edges of the joint and avoid air entrainment during application.
Complete
Finish the adhesive surface as soon as possible after application, using Sika® Tooling Agent N to smooth the surface. Do not use products containing solvents.
CLEANING TOOLS
Clean all application tools immediately after use with Sika® Remover-208. Once cured, the adhesive can only be removed mechanically. For skin contact with adhesive use Sika® Cleaning Wipes-100.
